Club collects for hurricane victims

WILBRAHAM Members of the Minnechaug Regional High School Key Club are joining other area Key Clubs in the effort to collect books for Gulf State schools and libraries devastated by Hurricane Katrina.

Local high school Key Clubs such as the one at Minnechaug are affiliated with the Springfield Kiwanas Club, which initiated the book collection efforts in western Massachusetts.

Joanne Weisser, co-advisor for the Minnechaug Key Club, said books for readers from the pre-kindergarten level through adult are needed.

"We're looking for new and used books, certainly recent publications, not books that are very old or out-of-date," Weisser said, adding that both paperback and hard cover editions are welcome.

The drive will run through Oct. 28. Books will be collected in the front office at Minnechaug Regional High School, and at Stony Hill Elementary School.

Donors wishing to drop off books at Stony Hill will find collection boxes in the school lobby. Collection hours at both locations are during school hours only.

"[A book] is one of those items where a person has used something and is willing to pass it on," Weisser said. "This is one area where we [as a community] certainly can be of help."
