WILBRAHAM — The committee overseeing the renovation of the main fire station on Boston Road has begun accepting bids from contractors for the project and expects to have a general contractor selected by around the beginning of March.

"General contractors have until [Feb.] 27 to submit bids," Building Inspector Lance Trevallion told Reminder Publications. "On the 27th we will open the bids and from there we as a committee will choose the low bid that fits our needs."

He added that the committee has already opened what he called "sub-bids" for specific portions of the project that a general contractor would not be able to complete such as electrical work, masonry, heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) upgrades and installation, and metal work.

The accepting of a bid would be a crucial step forward for the project, which has been in the planning stages since early 201l.

Once the low bidders are selected and contracts signed, work can begin, Trevallion, who was named project manager for the renovation by the Board of Selectmen in January, 2011, said.

Trevallion, Fire Chief Francis Nothe and other members of the committee, along with Tecton Architecture's Jeffrey McElreavy, presented a plan to the Board of Selectmen in January with an estimated hard construction budget of just a tad less than the $2.15 million approved by the town when planning for the renovation started. The total approved budget for the renovation is $2.4 million.

The renovated and expanded facility would take up 11,500 square feet, expanding to the north, west and south around the existing 3,600 square-foot building, which has been the headquarters for the Wilbraham Fire Department since it was built in 1952.

In addition to renovating the existing structure, plans include the construction of two new apparatus bays to the north, new ambulance bays to the west and new offices and public entrance to the south.
