Cottage Avenue Bridge will be repaired

WILBRAHAM Last week, the Romney administration announced that it is preparing to start work on a $2.68 million project to reconstruct the Cottage Avenue bridge between Ludlow an Wilbraham. This will be the first time the structure has been refurbished in its 66-year existence.

The project to reconstruct the bridge consists of beam and deck repair, sidewalk and bridge rail replacement, concrete repairs to the piers and abutments, and a painting of the superstructure.

"I enthusiastically support the Cottage Avenue Bridge project as it will help improve this main thoroughfare between Ludlow and Wilbraham," said Senate Minority Leader Brian Lees (R East Longmeadow). "I am hopeful that the repairs and reconstruction of the bridge will help many throughout the community, and I am eager to see the timely completion of this project."

Representative Thomas Petrolati (D Ludlow) added, "This busy thoroughfare connecting Ludlow and Wilbraham has been deemed structurally deficient by MassHighway and repairing these inadequacies has been a top priority of mine. I am extremely pleased that Acting Transportation Secretary John Ziemba and MassHighway Commissioner John Cogliano have given final approval to proceeding with the reconstruction of the Middle Street/Cottage Avenue Bridge."

Warner Brothers, Inc. of Sutherland will be the state's contractor. The project will start in the next several weeks and is expected to be complete in late 2006.
