WILBRAHAM — The rain ceased just long enough for construction of the newest addition to the Spec Pond Recreational Complex to officially begin with a groundbreaking ceremony on Sept. 6.

Surrounded by Wilbraham children who will be the primary beneficiaries of his donation, Paul Scully, president and CEO of Country Bank, marked the start of the building of the Country Bank Playground.

“This was built probably about 20 years ago,” Wilbraham Parks and Recreation Director Bryan Litz said while standing in front of the existing playground. “We have been working on making this area an expanded and more accessible space for kids. Luckily, thanks to Country Bank’s large donation, we can make that happen.”

The Country Bank Playground will be a “boundless” playground, according to a release by the Wilbraham Friends of Recreation (FOR), explaining the goal of such a facility is “to build truly inclusive playgrounds where children — and adults — can play and learn together in a fun and welcoming environment.”

Country Bank made a donation of $75,000 toward the Wilbraham FOR’s capital campaign for the project, and the playground is expected to open in May 2012.

“We want to thank Country Bank for such an extraordinary donation,” David Clini, president of the Wilbraham FOR, said. “Thanks to support from the community and companies like Country Bank and others, this will be a place for kids to play for years to come.”

The Wilbraham FOR has set a goal of $700,000 and has raised $530,000 to date.

“A lot has been [said] here about our donation, but all of the credit has to go to the Friends of Recreation,” Scully said. “Our job was easy. We just cut a check. These people are the ones doing the hard work.”
