Golf tourney honors fallen soldier

HAMPDEN A memorial golf tournament, honoring Captain John W. Maloney of Chicopee, will be conducted on July 21st at the Hampden Country Club.

"This is a way to keep his name alive," Robert Houle said, Maloney's best friend. "I don't want John to be filed away as just another wartime statistic. I want him to be remembered."

Maloney, a resident of Chicopee, was killed while serving in Iraq on June 16, 2005.

"This is hopefully the first of many [memorial golf tournaments]. It's hoped that it will be an annual event. I just wanted to establish a good event a long term event where people can honor and remember him by," Houle said.

Golf entry includes lunch, assorted gifts, use of locker room facilities, use of practice areas, greens fee/golf cart and dinner. Proper attire is required: collared shirt and no jeans. Soft spikes are also recommended.

Registration and lunch begin at noon and the shotgun/four-person start begins at 1 p.m. Golfers will compete for the longest drive and hole in one.

"The prizes for the hole in one, the longest drive, and raffle are a $1,000 cash prize, a big screen TV, a set of Callaway Golf Clubs, and Teddy Bear Pools in Chicopee is donating either a pool or a spa a $3,000 value," Houle said.

Dinner reception and social hour will begin at 6 p.m. with dinner following at 7 p.m. Awards and raffle will begin at 8 p.m.

All proceeds from the tournament will be donated to the Captain John W. Maloney Memorial Fund.
