Have an adventure in the Green Meadows with Thornton Burgess storytime

Date: 3/23/2010

March 23, 2010

HAMPDEN - The Hampden Public Library will host a free storytime featuring stories by Thornton W. Burgess on March 27 at 10:30 am. The storytime will take place in the Children's Room of the library, which is located at 625 Main St. in the Hampden Town House.

The featured storyteller will be Hampden resident Robert Youngman, who is back by popular demand after an appearance earlier this month in which he entertained children with Burgess stories about Grandfather Frog.

The program is sponsored by Friends of the Library as a celebration of the 100th anniversary of "Old Mother West Wind," which was Burgess' first published book. It set the stage for a series of beloved characters that have charmed children for generations, including Peter Rabbit, Grandfather Frog and Spotty the Turtle.

Thornton W. Burgess moved to Hampden in 1925 and lived at Laughing Brook.

Original artwork by Harrison Cady, illustrator of the early Burgess books, will be on display at the library from through April 8. Visitors are invited to view these enduring images during normal library hours. The library is open 1 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Wednesday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday.

Advance registration is not required. All ages are invited. For more information, call Hampden Public Library at 566-3047 or visit www.hampden-library.org.
