Library contest will run through February

By Sarah M. Corigliano

Assistant Managing Editor

HAMPDEN The Friends of the Hampden Public Library are celebrating Love Your Library Month with several events. One activity they have planned is a hidden quote contest, for which Reminder Publications is the media sponsor.

Hidden somewhere in the pages of the Feb. 6, Feb. 13, Feb. 20 and Feb. 27 editions of The Reminder will be the "Library Quote of the Week." Participants are asked to locate the quote (which will look like the logo seen with this story) and fill out an entry form identifying where they saw the quote.

Each week, one winner will be pulled from the entry forms that are filled out correctly and received on time, and the winner will be notified that they have won a removable, magnetic "Love Your Library" bumper sticker.

In addition to the weekly prize, all entry forms, on time with the correct answer, will be put into a drawing for the following prizes: $75 gift certificate for Hampden House Restaurant; $50 gift certificate to Village Food Mart; $25 gift certificate to Professional Dry Cleaners in Hampden. All prizes above were supplied by their proprieters. The winning entries will be pulled at the Community Book Swap March 11, between 10 and 11:30 a.m.

Friends co-president Patty Ehlers said Love Your Library month is a chance for libraries everywhere to promote awareness of the services provided at such institutions. In addition to the pizza party and poetry contest, she said the quote contest seemed a natural fit since, "everywhere we turned, there was another quote," highlighting the importance of libraries.

The Hampden Public Library closed July 2005 after the failure of a Proposition 2 1/2 override that would have provided library funding for that fiscal year. The Friends of the Hampden Public Library have organized monthly community book swaps in the Town Hall which will continue until the Library re-opens.

Entry forms for the Love Your Library Month quote contest will run in The Reminder each week in February, and the quotes will change each week. This week, readers will find the entry form on page 8. Questions about the quote contest may be referred to Patty Ehlers at 237-7061.

Libraries: An American Value

From the American Library Association

Libraries in America are cornerstones of the communities they serve. Free access to the books, ideas, resources, and information in America's libraries is imperative for education, employment, enjoyment, and self-government.

Libraries are a legacy to each generation, offering the heritage of the past and the promise of the future. To ensure that libraries flourish and have the freedom to promote and protect the public good in the 21st century, we believe certain principles must be guaranteed.

To that end, we affirm this contract with the people we serve:

We defend the constitutional rights of all individuals, including children and teenagers, to use the library's resources and services;

We value our nation's diversity and strive to reflect that diversity by providing a full spectrum of resources and services to the communities we serve;

We affirm the responsibility and the right of all parents and guardians to guide their own children's use of the library and its resources and services;

We connect people and ideas by helping each person select from and effectively use the library's resources ...
