WILBRAHAM No one ever expects to see a celebrity in the center of Wilbraham, especially on a Thursday afternoon.

But in late June, that's exactly what happened to the employees of the Village Store and Cafe on Main Street.

Bill Murray, star of stage and screen, made a stop in the Store that day, accompanied by three young boys.

Sixteen-year-old Sean Geaghan, who was behind the counter that afternoon, told Reminder Publications he didn't immediately recognize the star.

"He had a hat on, and dark glasses," Geaghan said. "The girl who was working with me said 'that's got to be Bill Murray'."

Village Store owner Mary Bandouveres said she wasn't working that afternoon, but that she had heard through her husband, Evan, that Murray was very pleasant.

"Sean had asked for his autograph and [Murray] said no, he didn't do that," Bandouveres said, adding that she'd heard Murray was a star known for guarding his privacy.

She said Murray asked for directions to Route 495, and then bought ice cream cones for the boys.

"He was just trying to be normal with his kids, getting ice cream," she said.

"They all got chocolate chip cookie dough," Geagan recalled.

He added that Murray made one more return trip inside the store for a beverage before pulling out in a late-model Mercedes station wagon.

"It was the brand-new one, silver," Geagan said.

Reminder Publications also followed up on a rumor that Murray might have been in town to check out the Wilbraham-Monson Academy as a potential school for one of his sons.

A spokeswoman from the Academy, who wishes to remain anonymous, said "We have not had any Murray visitors, they have not been here, and have not inquired."
