After a slow start, making just one of his first five shots, MacPhail stormed back into competition, as he missed three of his final 20 shots and six of his last 32. MacPhail finished the first round with 222 points, placing him third among 25 competitors. "I was speechless," MacPhail said. "It was almost too good to be true." In the quarterfinals, MacPhail faced Mike Massey, the top ranked artistic pool player in the world. As in the previous round, MacPhail fell behind early following a few misplayed shots, but was unable to come back as he had in the first round. Massey won the match and moved on to the semi-finals. "Not many can say they've played the very best player in their sport," MacPhail said following his defeat. "Over the years, my series with Mr. Massey is Massey two, MacPhail one, but I can honestly say that I've beaten the best." MacPhail finished the World Championship tournament in sixth place. Some of the 2007 tournaments MacPhail will compete in include the Masters in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania in March and the U.S. open in Southington, Connecticut in May. In addition to his competitions, MacPhail has upcoming appearances at the Camel Cigarette Convention in Arizona in late February and a two-day show during Bentley College's Family and Friends Weekend.
