Third Halloween Fun Run 'a great community builder'

HAMPDEN The Lions Club Halloween 5K Fun Run doesn't require runners to run in their Halloween costumes, but it would make it more fun, according to Rick Green, an organizer of the event.

This is the third year of the holiday fun run, and proceeds of the event will go toward the charitable work the Lions Club provides. Green said that initially funds were donated to the town's Parks and Recreation Department, but the Lions Club took over the work of setting up the run and adopted it as their own.

"[The attendance at the run] has been pretty consistent," Green said. "We got 40 to 55, typically, but the weather's not always cooperative." He said despite having heavy ran the past two years, runners still came out and had a good time.

Green said the course itself is not overly difficult it starts at Thornton W. Burgess Middle School on Wilbraham Road, turns left onto Raymond Drive, left onto Allen Street and then left again, back on to Wilbraham Road to the middle school.

And, even though it is a fun run, $50 cash prizes will be given to the top male and female runners and a $25 cash prize will be given to the runner with the best costume. The first 100 registered runners will also receive a T-shirt.

The run will be taking place Nov. 1 at 8 a.m. Pre-race registration and check-in will be open from 7 to 7:45 a.m. The fee for pre-registered runners is $12; the day of, it will be $15. Forms are available at the Richard R. Green Insurance office, 5 Allen St. Forms should also soon be available at www.hampden.org.

"The race is fun and open to everybody. It's a great community builder," Green said.

"The run is the same day as the Halloween costume party at Town Hall at 6 p.m.," he noted.
