WMA hosts SSO musicians

WILBRAHAM Wilbraham & Monson Academy is proud to present Springfield Symphony Orchestra's Kevin Rhodes and Albert Brouwer on Nov. 2 at 7 p.m. at Wilbraham & Monson Academy's Alumni Memorial Chapel on Main Street in Wilbraham.

The evening of music for piano and flute is free and open to the public with an audience reception to follow the performance. The event is sponsored by the Francis Michael Casey Fund for the Fine & Performing Arts. For information about the performance, contact Caroline Smith at 596.6811.

Kevin Rhodes celebrates his fifth season as Music Director of the Springfield Symphony Orchestra in Massachusetts and the Traverse Symphony in Michigan amid a climate of artistic accolades for both orchestras' classical performances, as well as unprecedented growth in attendance and public enthusiasm for classical music.

Rhodes began his professional

conducting career at the age of 16 in his hometown of Evansville, Indiana. He received a bachelor's degree in piano performance from Michigan State, studying conducting with Leon Gregorian and piano with Ralph Votapek and Deborah Moriarty-Forger.

He earned a master's degree in orchestral conducting at the University of Illinois under the tutelage of Paul Vermel.

Albert Brouwer is the principal flutist in the Springfield Symphony and Vermont Symphony orchestras. He also plays with the Montreal Symphony and Albany Symphony orchestras as well as the National Orchestras Institute in Maryland.

As a member of the Hortus Musicae ensemble, Brouwer regularly performs solo and chamber music concerts in the New England area as well as in Montreal, where he won the Dbut competition.

This energetic musician devotes himself to teaching at Bishops University in Lennoxville, Quebec.
