Agawam Senior Center makes meals to go available for seniors

Date: 3/20/2020

AGAWAM– Beginning this week, the Agawam Senior Center is offering seniors who usually take advantage of the facility’s noon meal the option to get a meal to go, delivered curbside.

“They will come to the senior center and, staying in their car, pull up to the lower entrance between 11 and 11:45 a.m. for pick ups and staff will run a meal out to them,” Michael Squindo, the center’s executive director, told Reminder Publishing. He said individuals wishing to take advantage of this service must order the meal the day before before 4 p.m. They can do this either online at www.myactivecenter.com or by calling the center at 821-0604.

This to-go meal service began on March 23, and Squindo said seniors had received a robocall inviting them to order the initial meal late in the previous week.  “By offering takeout meals we maintain social distancing, but people who need [the meal] can get one,” Squindo said of this new service.

Though the center itself remains closed to the public, Squindo wanted to remind seniors that staff is still available to assist residents by phone with accessing other services. In addition, the center will continue to provide transportation services on a limited basis for the time being, for non-sick medical appointments, though “a lot of medical appointments are moving to telemedicine,” Squindo noted,  and for necessary grocery shopping.

“We’re trying to connect people to the most appropriate services, help them maintain the quarantine and social distancing,” he said of the services the center is still able to offer seniors.”
