Bankruptcy court will let Chez Josef auction proceed

Date: 1/4/2023

AGAWAM – The auction for the real estate and the equipment at the former Chez Josef banquet facility will go forward, but the date has not yet been set.

Aaron Posnik of Aaron Posnik & Co. explained to Reminder Publishing that the bankruptcy court has allowed the auction to take place, but the date will not be announced until after Jan. 21. He said the new date will be listed on the auctioneer’s website at www.posnik.com.

Posnik believes the new date will be sometime in mid-February, but could not yet confirm it.

The auction was originally set to take place Nov. 16, 2022.

The property consists of the building sitting on nearly 10 acres. When it was up for the sale, the price was listed at $2.5 million by R.J. Greeley Co. in 2021.

“Chez Josef has been an institution in this marketplace for nearly 60 years. It is hard to find someone around here that has not attended some type of function there. The [coronavirus] pandemic has been a challenge for the banquet business, but the banquet business will return,” Brendan Greeley, president of R.J. Greeley, told Reminder Publishing at that time. “The current owners, who have enjoyed operating the business, have decided to pursue some other opportunities and let the next entrepreneur write their own chapter for the property.”

The property was not sold. The business closed and fell into bankruptcy, interrupting plans for a foreclosure auction.

The 10-acre parcel on Shoemaker Lane is zoned as industrial.

Posnik said the auction will feature one sale of the property and another sale of the equipment on the same date.  The auction will take place both in-person at the Chez Josef property and live online.
