AGAWAM -- Looking to hit the links this summer? Why not make it for a good cause.

On Aug. 1, the Bethany Assembly of God will host their annual golf tournament to help finance Royal Kids Camp: a week-long summer program created for seven to 11-year-olds in the foster care system.

"To see how the looks on the kids faces change from the first day of camp to the last, it's amazing," Pat Senflug, secretary to Pastor Peter Patterson, explained. "We really create positive memories for them for the whole year."

The camp gives 32 foster children the chance to have a week that is truly all about them. Sadly, Senflug confirmed, "a good portion of them have been abused or been through the system."

The Massachusetts Department of Children and Families reported that in the second quarter of 2009, there were over 8,000 children in placement in this state. In 86 percent of cases handled, there were reports of abuse and neglect.

The camp is made possible by the volunteer efforts of about 40 individuals who sacrifice a week's pay to better the lives of traumatized youth. They are able to offer campers plenty of one-on-one attention, with a counselor to camper ratio of one to two.

The cost for each child to attend the camp for the week is $500. In selecting the campers for the year, Bethany makes every effort to focus on children around the age of seven. The hope is that this will ensure the child gets to attend the camp the entire five years he or she is eligible.

"We get 'em young in the hopes that we can bring them back all five years," Senflug stated. "I'd say it works out about 60 percent of the time."

Those interested in participating in the tournament may contact the church at 789-2930.The tournament will take place at St. Anne's Golf Club. Tee time will be at 8 a.m. and golf will be followed by a meal and silent auction.

For those who wish to support the cause but aren't interested in channeling Tiger to do so, $20 will secure a spot at the dinner table.
