AGAWAM — The National League of Cities presented Mayor Richard Cohen with seven awards for the community's participation in the "Let's Move!" (LM) campaign on Nov. 29.

In LM, there are five goals that participating towns commit to and can win awards for, based upon achievements made in each category. Three awards can be won for each, in the form of bronze, silver and gold medals.

The city achieved gold status in two goals, which are to display the MyPlate graphic in municipal and county food venues, and to have 30 percent of those venues implement food service policies in accordance with the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. A bronze medal was also earned in the goal of creating health awareness in early education programs.

Cohen told Reminder Publications, "It's only the beginning — we're going to strive for gold medals in of the goals."

He attributed hard work to the success. "I commend the LM committee, under the direction of Shelby Hall-Gibbons, for such wonderful accomplishments, in such a short period of time," Cohen said.

Agawam became an official LM community in August. First Lady Michelle Obama began the campaign in 2010, in an effort to combat childhood obesity and to promote lifestyles of exercise and healthy eating among communities.
