By Katelyn Gendron Reminder Assistant Editor AGAWAM Carlos Silva was born and bred on family values in Cape Verde, an island off the west African coast. With over 16 brothers and sisters, nightly family dinners were what most Americans would consider an elaborate family reunion. Having immigrated to the United States, Silva, cook and owner of American Classics Restaurant at 740 Springfield St. in Feeding Hills, has taken his love of food and family with him to Western Massachusetts. On Thanksgiving Day, Silva and his wife Angelica will be offering up to 100 individuals the opportunity to eat a free holiday dinner with their family from 3 - 5 p.m. Angelica said that her husband decided to offer the free meal this year because he became upset after seeing so many people come to their restaurant alone for Thanksgiving dinner. "He would feed the world if he could," she said of his generous nature. Angelica added that she and her husband have embraced the opportunity to give back to those in the community that have supported their business and their family. The couple has five children together, and Angelica said those who dine at their restaurant which specializes in American-style cuisine have made them feel like part of the Agawam family. "We've been really blessed in Agawam," she said. "They've adopted us." Carlos stressed the importance of family and a "family environment" on Thanksgiving Day, which is what he will be striving to create for all those who choose to share this holiday with his family. "If it were up to me no one would go hungry but I do what I can," he said. The menu will include turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, corn, cranberry sauce, candied sweet potatoes, coffee, soda and a choice of pumpkin pie or cheesecake. For all those dining alone and wishing to have a free holiday meal with the Silva's at their restaurant please R.S.V.P. by calling American Classics Restaurant at 789-2203. |
