AGAWAM The Lions Club in Agawam, a chapter of the largest volunteer service organization in the world is coming together once again for their biggest fundraiser of the year.

The Agawam Lions Club is a non-profit organization that provides such services as aiding members of the community with health service needs, school scholarships and disaster relief. They are now calling upon residents to volunteer their time for the club's largest fundraiser, the Chicken Barbecue at The Big E Fair.

According to Ray Wyckoff, president of the Agawam Lions Club, this has been an annual event for the past 40 years that requires 20 to 25 people per shift for two shifts per day of The Big E Fair.

This is a huge endeavor for the Lions Club, Wyckoff said, where every member lends a hand to help.

"We have some elderly fellas in their 80s and 90s that come over and cut up cabbage for the salads because everybody likes to help," Wyckoff said.

The Lions Club building, located on The Big E fairgrounds allows fairgoers to come in at anytime between 11 a.m. and 8 p.m. to order their chicken dinner. The cost of the chicken dinner, which includes a chicken and chips for $7.95.

According to Wyckoff, there is also chicken nuggets for children, and plenty of beverages and desserts.

The Lions Club in Agawam is looking to raise as much as they can for the various programs that they support such as the Agawam Senior Center, the Agawam Library, the Agawam Little League, the D.A.R.E. Program and the Parish Cupboard.

But with a Lions Club chapter of almost 90 people, while one of the largest in the region, Wyckoff said, there are still not enough members to aid in this effort at The Big E.

Volunteers will be given a free ticket to the fair in addition to free transportation to and from The Big E, according to information released by the Agawam Lions Club.

Every volunteer will have the opportunity to choose their activities such as preparing the food, serving or cleaning tables.
