South Westfield Street to be resurfaced this year

carley@thereminder.comAGAWAM — South Westfield Street is scheduled for reconstruction and repaving later this year. The project was on hold until the fate of the Southwest Area Sewer Extension Project Phase II was decided. In December 2012, the City Council tabled the sewer project indefinitely while alternative options are researched.
Chris Golba, superintendent for the Department of Public Works, said, "The road is in horrific shape it's pretty much falling apart." He said the $270,000 reconstruction project encompasses 3,900 feet of the street starting at the point where Phase 1 of the sewer project ends.
He continued, "The project had been put off [until] a decision was made about Phase II. I anticipate that the department will get everything prepared by late August/early September and will pave the road all at once in September/October."
Golba added that the project is dependent on Chapter 90 funding that provides monies to complete road projects.
Gov. Deval Patrick signed bill H.3379 on May 24, increasing the Chapter 90 funding from $200 million to $300 million for 2013. Funds have yet to be allocated.
