Reminder Assistant EditorAGAWAM Town officials have taken another step to ensure the preservation of one of Agawam's historic treasures.
The City Council unanimously approved a resolution establishing the School Street Barn Gift Account at its last meeting on Nov. 4.
"The School Street Barn represents a barn that is of historic value and as such it is very important that the barn be preserved while its use is still being determined," Mayor Susan Dawson said, adding its uses could include a reception pavilion or performance venue.
City Councilor Robert Rossi voiced his concerns over the possible abuse of the account's funds.
"I'm not against that particular account," he said. "I think the intent is good but with these accounts there is no direct accountability [for expenditures].
"I would like to see more direct accountability on where the money comes from and where it's going," Rossi continued. "We need to have periodic audits. I'm not accusing anyone of misappropriating our funds, it just allows for abuses."
The mayor is responsible for appropriating the funds for maintenance and improvements to the structure, according to the resolution.
Deborah Dachos, director of Planning and Community Development, noted several projects have already been completed including masonry and structural work. She added $1,600 was also appropriated for a study of the property.
"Even though [the School Street Barn] is only about 100 years old it's a strong symbol of Agawam's agricultural past," David Cecchi, chair of the Agawam Historical Commission, explained. "Agawam was a big agricultural community until the mid-20th century. [Agawam] still has its farms but . as the town was developed we've lost a lot of farms and [historic] buildings."
Dachos said this account will provide funding for a historic preservation specialist to outline specific restorations required to ensure the long term viability of the structure.
