HUNTINGTON – The Gateway Boys Basketball squad was looking to avenge their prior loss to Belchertown when they hosted the Orioles once again on April 1.
Sadly for the home team, the result was the same, with Belchertown downing Gateway 68-29. The Gators started strong on the first possession of the game, getting a good shot off, only to have it rim out and get rebounded by Belchertown.
The Orioles’ Jordan Lanoue opened the scoring with a basket from the paint, starting a 10-0 run in which Lanoue scored all 10 points. Belchertown went on to play stingy defense, holding the gators to only 4 points in the opening quarter. Utilizing excellent ball movement and good shot selection, the Orioles lead extended to 19-4 to end the first. Lanoue, a senior, scored 17 in the frame.
Gateway started the next quarter playing good defense of their own, forcing bad shots by the Orioles. Both teams had big stops on the defensive end of the court throughout the quarter. The visitors went on a 6-0 run midway through the period to extend their lead to 28-6. Gateway junior Ryan Keach stalled the run by making two free throws.
Later in the quarter, Belchertown had another 6-0 streak to end the half leading 36-13. Gateway Senior Tristan Wallace opened the second half nailing a three-pointer to give the hosts a spark to begin the half. Belchertown rallied, scoring 13 out of the next 15 points to close out the third quarter with a 49-18 lead. The Gators again used the long ball to open the next quarter when Preston Coffey nailed a long three point shot.
Gateway was able to get off some quality shots in the fourth, but was unable to get them to fall often enough. Keach sank three buckets in the final stanza, finishing the game with a team-high 10 points. Jayden Lopez-Santiago tossed in 5 and Leo Balboni added 4 for the Gators.
Belchertown’s Lanoue was the game's high scorer, finishing with 31 points.
