Deadline nears for residents seeking city positions

HOLYOKE With the deadline for returning papers less than two months away, 39 residents have taken out nomination papers for a variety of city positions, and 13 have returned them.

Papers, which became available in January, must be returned to the Registrars of Voters Office by candidates by 5 p.m. on Sept. 13.

Most positions require 50 certified signatures, according to the City Clerk's office.

Mayor Michael Sullivan, who kicked off his campaign for a fourth term in May, is being challenged by Joseph McCormick of 20 Easthampton Road.

According to the city's Personnel Office, the mayor's salary is currently $75,000. As of January 1, 2006, the salary will increase to $80,000, and as of July 1, 2006, it will increase again to $85,000.

As of July 14, City Clerk Susan Egan is the only candidate to take out papers for the position, and no one has taken out papers for City Treasurer, including City Treasurer David Donoghue.

The City Council, which includes 15 members one for each of the seven wards and eight at-large positions, has a number candidates hoping for an at-large position.

Incumbent at-large candidates include Kevin Jourdain, Peter Tallman, Elaine Pluta, James McDermott, James Leahy, Raymond Feyre, John Whelihan and Joseph McGiverin.

Challenging the incumbents are Patricia Devine, Michael Franco, Patrick Shaughnessy, Bruce Gibson, Patricia Duffy, John Pietrzykowski, Joseph Lewis and Stanley Wielgosz.

If there are one more than double the amount of candidates for an at-large position, there would have to be a preliminary election on Oct. 11.

For Ward One councilor, Lillian Santiago is currently running unopposed, along with Ward Two councilor Diosdado Lopez.

Ward Three Councilor Hellen Norris has taken out papers, and is being challenged by Anthony Martin Keane.

Ward Four Councilor John Lecca has also taken out papers, along with John Pierce, Mildred Santana and Thomas Hart.

The only person to take out papers for the Ward Five position thus far is Linda Vacon.

Ward Six Councilor Mark Lubold is currently running unopposed, and in Ward 7, where incumbent Councilor Mark Lubold has not taken out papers for re-election, but four residents have.

These residents include Paul Bowes, John O'Neill, Stephen Donoghue, and Rebecca Lisi.

City councilors receive a stipend of $10,000.

As for the School Committee, At-Large Councilor Mary Signet has taken out papers.

No one has taken out papers for Wards 1 and 5, but Ward 2 School Committee member Yvonne Garcia will run for re-election, along with Ward 3 incumbent Johnathon Allyn, and Ward 4 incumbent Barry Conway.

Ward 6 Councilor William Collamore will be challenged by Monica Seibert.

Ward 7 Committee member Margaret Boulais has also taken out papers for the Committee, which pays a stipend of $5,000.

As of last Friday, 13 candidates have returned their papers, which include: Linda Vacon, Susan Egan, Michael Franco, Patrick Shaughnessy, Joseph McCormick, Kevin Jourdain, John Pietrzykowski, Patricia Devine, James Leahy, Mary Signet and John J. O'Neill.
