HOLYOKE – City Hall was the site to celebrate the beginning of Polish-American Heritage Month with a flag raising on Oct. 6.
Members of the Polish American Congress and Holyoke’s Polish American Community joined Mayor Joshua Garcia for the honors.
“It’s always one of my greatest pleasures to take on every so often ceremonies like this with different cultures, different groups. Today we recognize the history and the contributions of the Polish community,” Garcia said. “When we do these traditions we reflect a little bit on the history and how far the different groups and cultures have come, and there’s so much overlap in experiences and community ceremonies, it just reminds us to self-reflect a little bit and remind us on values.”
Mayor Garcia read a proclamation designating October Polish American Heritage Month and spoke about the importance of the Polish community throughout history in the country and in Holyoke.
After reading the proclamation, Garcia added that it was encouraging to see the community together for an event celebrating the values of population within Holyoke following the last 48-hours in the city where focus was on the death of an infant after their pregnant mother was struck by a stray bullet.
“It’s always humbling when my brothers and sisters not just in Holyoke but around the region, come together and reaffirm values like this. That’s really what we are, we are all brothers and sisters, and it is very humbling to know there are good people. There are good people in the city, around the region, doing God’s work and maintaining those very values. Not just for today, but for many years to come.”
