HOLYOKE – Kicking off the City Council’s Jan. 18 meeting was a proclamation from the council congratulating Gary Rome, of Gary Rome Hyundai, for being named TIME Magazine Dealer of the Year 2023 for Massachusetts.
The award is one of the automobile industry’s most prestigious and highly coveted honors. Receiving the award in state means he will now compete for the regional and national title of TIME Magazine’s Dealer of the Year.
“Thank you for recognizing me of this honor. It’s not work, it’s love,” Rome said to the council. “I absolutely love what we do in the community.”
Rome is one of the select group of 48 dealer nominees across the country who will be honored at the 106th annual National Automobile Dealers Association Show in Dallas later this month. The Rome dealership has donated to a variety of causes.
The proclamation honored Rome for his business as well as his philanthropic efforts that have made him a staple of the Holyoke community. Council President Todd McGee called what Rome has done for Holyoke during his career “amazing.”
“You run a phenomenal business for the city but if you look at all the posts you have, whatever social media platform, it’s a family up there, all employees are taken care of, it’s like a family atmosphere. That’s the same type of family atmosphere that you bring to the city of Holyoke with all the charities and everything that you do to help the city,” McGee said. “You could have gone anywhere else…you chose to stay right here in Holyoke, and we can’t thank you enough for that.”
Rome thanked the council for the proclamation and joked he “lives in Holyoke, but happens to sleep somewhere else.”
