HOLYOKE – Holyoke High School North had to make the decision earlier this month to cancel the annual Junior/Senior Prom.
“On Monday, Jan. 9, Holyoke High School North staff had to make the difficult decision to cancel the school’s Junior/Senior Prom that had been scheduled for Jan. 20 because of insufficient ticket sales,” Principal Lori McKenna said in a statement to Reminder Publishing.
According to McKenna, only 90 tickets were sold by the purchase deadline of Jan. 5, which was less than half of the number of tickets needed to cover prom costs. She added while past years have seen enough participating students needed to cover costs, this year only about a quarter of eligible students bought tickets.
McKenna said she and school staff knew canceling the Junior/Senior Prom was a “huge disappointment” for the students who had planned to participate. To try and make up for the cancelled plan, school staff and student leaders and class advisors met on Jan. 12 to discuss suggestions for alternative events.
“Our students understood the reasons why we had to cancel the Junior/Senior Prom. We made note of their suggestions for alternative events for continued consideration,” McKenna said.
While school staff and the students impacted by the Junior/Senior Prom continue deciding on a new event for students, McKenna made note that the school would be moving forward with plans for their Senior Prom in May.
