| HOLYOKE Wistariahurst Museum announces two lecture series with an impressive lineup of speakers on the rich history of our community, "Historical Perspectives" and "History to Go." Historical Perspectives Lectures The first Wednesday of each month at 6 pm will offer an impressive array of college faculty and professionals. Admission $3. Light refreshments will be served. October 4, 6 p.m. "From Island to City: Irish Immigration and Puerto Rican Migration" - Mayor Michael Sullivan will speak on his research on the fascinating parallels between these two island peoples. Nov, 1, 6 p.m. "Polish, Puerto Rican and Islamic Immigration Experiences" - Dr. M. Saleem Bajwa, Joe Kos, Xenia Rosado-Merced will have a panel discussion about the immigration experiences of these varied ethnic and religious groups. Dec. 6, 6 p.m. "Contemporary Issues in Immigration" -Vinnie Ferraro, PhD and Professor of Politics at Mount Holyoke College will enlighten current immigration issues in the context of the past. Jan. 10, 2007, 6 p.m. "Finding the Hook- Writing Historically-Based Plays" - Priscilla Kane Hellweg and Rachel Kuhn Daviau from Enchanted Circle Theater share insights gleaned while writing their much acclaimed historical plays. Feb. 7, 2007, 6 p.m." The Hidden Holyoke: Working in Holyoke" - Daniel Czitrom, PhD and Professor of History at Mount Holyoke College will give a slide show and talk on industrial work in Holyoke 1870-1940. March 7, 2007, 6 p.m. "The City and its Peoples" - Helen Lefkowitz Horowitz, PhD. Professor of History at Smith College will talk about lives of immigrants and women in urban America. April 4, 2007, 6 p.m. "Survivance: French-Canadian efforts to preserve religion, language and culture in late nineteenth-century Holyoke" -Susan Fliss, Research Librarian at Dartmouth College and PhD candidate at the University of Maine at Orono. May 2, 2007, 6 p.m. "Holyoke Gas & Electric: Holyoke's Populist Corporation" - Ted Belsky, EdD. Retired Professor at American International College will talk about the Populist Movement and the formation of the H.G. & E. June 6, 2007, 6 p.m. "Latino Immigration: Race and Place" - Ginetta Candelario, PhD, and Professor of Sociology and Women's Studies at Smith College will speak on the effect of racism on Latino immigrant/migrant's lives. History to Go Lectures The third Friday of each month Wistariahurst will host afternoon talks around the City and at Wistariahurst that will highlight the unique history of Holyoke and her surrounding communities. "Birth of Holyoke Community College" - Neil Moriarty will recall the formation of Holyoke Community College from its earliest days as Holyoke Junior College 1946-1973. Talk at Wistariahurst. Oct. 20, noon. Tour of the Skinner Chapel at United Congregational Church - Built in memory of Sarah and William Skinner this chapel is one of Holyoke's most beautiful sanctuaries. "The Scents and Traditions of Winter Greenery" - Master Gardener Deborah Long-Smith will give a talk on the history of holiday herbs and greenery, with tips for using them in your home. Talk at Wistariahurst. January 19, 2007 noon. "The Book of James: A family history project" - Richard Towne will show the results of his amazing quest in researching his family history. "Fifty-plus years of the Holyoke St. Patrick's Parade: Looking back and looking forward" - Michael Burke, beloved Holyoke newspaperman will give an overview of this amazing cultural icon. Talk at Wistariahurst. March 16, 2007, noon. "Elizabeth Towne: Holyoke's Pioneering Woman in Politics, Publishing and Positive Thinking" -Tzivia Gover, publisher of the Nautilus II. Talk will take place in Mrs. Towne's former home, the CARE Center, 247 Cabot St. April 20, 2007, noon. "The Mill River Flood" - Eric Weber will present a slide show of his collection of stereoscope photos. Taken following the flood these stereoscopes give vivid account of the devastating industrial accident in 1874. Talk at Wistariahurst. May 18, 2007, noon. "Come Have Fun: The Story of Mountain Park" - Jay Ducharme will talk about this most wonderful place and its impact on generations of Holyokers.
