School Committee recognizes service of three people

Date: 12/31/2021

HOLYOKE — At the recent meeting of the Holyoke School Committee on Dec. 20, three people were awarded plaques of recognition for their service to the Holyoke Public Schools.

The first plaque was given to Liz LaFond who has served the schools for 44 years. The committee wished her much success and happiness in her retirement and in future endeavors.

“We want to thank you for your many years of service to our district, our students and our families, to the Holyoke Public Schools,” said Vice Chair Mildred Lefebvre. “I’m gonna miss you, but I know I’m going to see you around.”

LaFond thanked the committee for the recognition and reflected on her time in the schools. She said that one of her best days was when she was able to help a parent in the school system.

“After 44 years, it goes without saying that I love what I did for a long, long time,” said LaFond.

The second plaque was awarded to Terence Murphy. Murphy served as Acting Mayor after the departure of former Mayor Alex Morse. The School Committee thanked him for stepping up to the plate in this role and supporting students and families in Holyoke.

“Thank you very much for this, thank you for working with me. I was happy to see us move along on the school project and a few other things,” said Murphy.

The final plaque recipient was At Large School Committee Member Devin Sheehan. He served on the School Committee for 12 years. “Although you’re leaving the board, I’m very sure it’s not the last time we’re going to see you,” said Mayor Joshua Garcia.

Sheehan took the time to reflect on his time in office and to look ahead to his next steps.

“I’m grateful to everyone here who has worked to help me along the way,” said Sheehan.
He noted that his service to the School Committee is not ending and his new role starts Jan. 1.

“I am honored that I have been appointed to serve on the School Committee of the Greater Commonwealth School District,” said Sheehan.

The School Committee Meeting ended with a routine approval of minutes before adjournment. Those interested in viewing the meeting in its entirety are encouraged to visit the Holyoke Media page.
