| By Lori Szepelak Correspondent SPRINGFIELD An empowering informational teen conference is planned Oct. 27 at Mercy Medical Center for pregnant and parenting teens in the city. The annual Springfield Maternal Child Health Commission Teen Conference, sponsored by the City of Springfield's Department of Health & Human Services and the Family Life Center for Maternity at Mercy Medical Center, is planned from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Deliso Conference Center. Following a continental breakfast from 9 to 9:25 a.m., Alice Hodge, RN, BSN, CCE, parenting education coordinator at the Family Life Center for Maternity, will open the conference, followed by welcoming remarks by Helen R. Caulton-Harris, director, City of Springfield's Department of Health & Human Services. The centerpiece of the teen conference is a "Credit For Life" workshop, outlining for teens how to prepare a budget and learn money management skills to build one's future. Credit For Life instructors will include Deborah Kumeiga, vice president, New Alliance Bank, Linda Saltus, government affairs specialist, Mass Housing, Nancy Mirkin, vice president, Hampden Bank, and Jodi Gerulaitis, financial education officer, Country Bank. The morning session will conclude with teens in the YWCA Teen Parent Program of Springfield providing testimonials on their journeys as young parents, followed by a buffet luncheon. The early afternoon session opens with a workshop titled "What Would You Do? Positive Communication Is What Counts" by Tammy Sharif, Esq. Sharif has a private law practice in Springfield and is an adjunct professor at Cambridge College. Sanford Jeames, DHA, an instructor at Cambridge College, will close out the day's workshops with a program titled "Pathways to Education: College Admissions and Careers."
