Astronaut Scott Kelly to speak at Springfield Public Forum

Date: 2/21/2023

SPRINGFIELD — Astronaut Scott Kelly will be the speaker at the next presentation of the Springfield Public Forum on March 5.

The talk, “Lessons from a Year in Space,” will take place at 2 p.m. at Springfield Symphony Hall. The lecture is free and no tickets are required.

Amy Roberts, the new president of Springfield Public Forum, said the group is very excited for the event as it is focused on families. “We try to put on a lot of different events, but not a lot of them are for families,” she told Reminder Publishing.

According to information supplied by Springfield Public Forum, “Kelly is a former NASA astronaut and retired United States Navy Captain, U.S. spaceflight record holder and an experienced test pilot having logged more than 15,000 hours of flight time in more than 40 different aircraft and spacecraft … During his yearlong mission, known worldwide as the ‘Year in Space,’ he conducted three spacewalks before returning home in March 2016. His Year in Space Mission was chronicled in a Time Magazine documentary series and an Emmy Award-winning PBS special.”

Among his honors, Kelly received the Defense Superior Service Medal, the Legion of Merit and Distinguished Flying Cross and was on the cover of Time Magazine in December 2014 and was named one of its 100 Most Influential People in 2015.
His identical twin brother Mark is also a former NASA astronaut and the current junior U.S. senator from Arizona.

Roberts added the forum is working on presentations such as this one that “could be a catalyst [for children] to think about what they can be.”

The forum wants to broaden the audience for its presentations, she said. Roberts noted the next presentation will be in May and the exact date is yet to be determined. It will be about the future of work from the viewpoint of small and medium businesses as well as entrepreneurs. It will be more than a lecture, she said, and more of a workshop for people interested in being an entrepreneur.
