SPRINGFIELD — Leading up to a busy, contested 2023 election season in the city of Springfield, individuals have been certified and the final list of candidates running for mayor and City Council has been released.
A preliminary election — for mayor, City Council at-large and Ward 6 — will take place on Sept. 12. The municipal election for mayor and City Council will be on Nov. 7.
The mayoral race is made up of five candidates including incumbent Mayor Domenic Sarno, state Rep. Orlando Ramos, City Councilor at-Large Justin Hurst, City Council President Jesse Lederman and David Francis Ciampi.
Twenty-one candidates are vying for five councilor at-large seats. The candidates include Juan Francisco Latorre III, Drew Keaton El, incumbent Tracye Whitfield, Mike Lee, Nicole Coakley, Thomas Oakley, incumbent Kateri Walsh, Lynell Gasque, Juan Caraballo III, incumbent Sean Curran, Debra Fletcher, Brian Santaniello, Kim Marie Rivera, Gerry Martin, Willie Naylor, Soraya Denise Mcelya, Norman Roldan, Edward Nunez, Jose Delgado, Jonathan Viruet and Charles Anthony Stokes.
Acting Deputy Election Commissioner Chelsea Parmentier explained that out of the 21 candidates, the top 10 will move on past September.
Three candidates are running for City Council Ward 6 including Humberto Caro, Shanequa Fryar and incumbent Victor Davila.
Incumbent Ward 1 City Councilor Maria Perez is running unopposed along with Ward 2 City Councilor Michael Fenton.
Incumbent Ward 3 City Councilor Melvin Edwards is also running unopposed.
Ward 4 City Councilor Malo Brown is seeking reelection in a contested race against Abdul-Kareem Kibodya.
Incumbent Ward 5 City Councilor Lavar Click-Bruce is running unopposed.
City Councilor Timothy Allen is seeking reelection in an uncontested race for Ward 7.
Incumbent Ward 8 City Councilor Zaida Govan is running unopposed.
The deadline for voters to register or make changes prior to the city preliminary is Sept. 2 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.
The deadline for voters to register or make changes prior to the municipal election is Oct. 28 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.
