SPRINGFIELD — Omnipoint Wireless, an affordable technology service for everyone, has opened its first internet café and tech store in downtown Springfield.
Originally created as a “social justice movement” for the internet, Omnipoint CEO Timothy Paul said that influence continues today.
“We provide all services that all big box carriers provide particularly for those unable to afford it,” he said. This includes affordable internet, mobility and connectivity, available for anyone.
To provide underserved residents with new offerings, Omnipoint created a resource at 1666 Main St.
On May 11, the location officially opened to the public.
Inside, visitors can find a meeting space, private workspace, conference facility to be used for meetings and more.
On the café front, Monsoon Roastery — a Springfield-based coffee shop — offers its goods, while PC Solutions offers laptop and phone repair.
“Everything is local,” Paul said.
To use the new space, people can just show up — no reservation is required. However, if someone would like to use the conference space, it must be reserved.
The internet café and tech store are open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Free parking for the space is available at the rear of the building.
After conducting a market study, Paul said they found that the Springfield area had a need for this service. “Springfield in particular is a place we believe we can enhance the need for people to get connected,” he shared.
Paul said the coronavirus pandemic revealed the importance of the internet and connection.
“To give somebody a good, safe workplace to feel comfortable is what it’s all about,” he shared.
On evenings starting in June, Omnipoint will offer workshops to teach people how to use a laptop, iPad, Excel, Word and so on.
When he spoke with Reminder Publishing — before the location opened — Paul expressed his excitement for this “flagship.”
“[We are] excited about Omnipoint coming to Springfield [and] hope to close the digital divide,” he said. “It’s a great place if I must say.”
In India and Europe, internet cafés are “very popular” for people to go and get connected, Paul shared. While Omnipoint is in 11 states, if this internet café and tech store is successful, Paul said they will open more.
