SPRINGFIELD – The Sinai Temple is celebrating its historic 90th anniversary with two nights of events for members of the congregation.
On Oct. 28, the celebration will kick off with a musical service. Musicians Sue Kurian, Michael Nix and Cantor Bruce Ruben will be featured. Past rabbis and traditions will also be honored.
On Oct. 29, the temple is hosting a gala. The gala will feature wine and hors d’oeuvres along with a performance by comedian Rabbi Bob Alper.
Other weekend events include a visual display of Sinai Temple’s history, a dedication of gifts to the temple, book donations to Washington School and a time capsule from Religious School.
Sinai Temple President Richard Alpert said that these events are a great way to honor both the past and the future of the synagogue.
“A central feature of Judaism is memory. We remember the foundational events in our history and this is another way to remember what we’ve accomplished and where we’ve come from. It’s about thinking of what we’ve accomplished and also to provide a foundation to looking forward,” said Alpert.
Jackie Neiman, chair of the 90th Anniversary Committee, agreed that this is a great way to reflect on the temple’s history.
“For me, the moment feels reflective, as I was part of the planning for the 75th anniversary and I can’t believe that was 15 years ago already. I still feel relatively new, so these milestone markers for time passing causes me to reflect on just how connected I am to Sinai and how lucky I feel to be part of this community,” she said.
Rabbi Jeremy Master notedthe long history of the temple in the Springfield community.
“It’s wonderful that this Jewish community has been such an important part of the Springfield area for so long. It’s a special thing to celebrate the history of our synagogue here,” he said.
Gala tickets for members of the congregation are $18 and available to purchase until Oct. 21. Tickets can be purchased online at https://sinaitemple.shulcloud.com/form/90th_anniv_celebration or in person at the Sinai Temple.
The weekend of celebrations will be a fun way to look at the history of the temple and where they will go from here.
“Arriving at significant milestones together, especially for a large group of people, can also be a bonding experience, strengthening the community that is celebrating. Having fun and forging stronger ties within our Sinai community seem like perfect reasons to celebrate our 90th anniversary,” said Nieman.
