SPRINGFIELD – The city of Springfield recognized the impact made by veterans at its annual parade and wreath-laying event. The city and the Veterans’ Activities Committee honored 2022 Veteran of the Year WWII Navy Veteran and retired Fire Deputy Chief Patrick Keough and 2022 Parade Marshall Vietnam War Navy Veteran Robert Shonak. Hundreds of people gathered at City Hall after the conclusion of the parade down State and then Main streets. Thomas Belton , the city’s director of Veterans’ Services, reminded the audience, that 104 years ago today the guns were silenced marking the end of WWI and the eventual establishment of Veterans Day.
