SPRINGFIELD — A large crowd gathered on Court Street, across from Springfield City Hall, for the annual lighting of the Menorah on Dec. 7.
Mayor Domenic Sarno was joined by state and city officials, along with Rabbi Chaim Kosofsky, students from Lubavitcher Yeshiva Academy and members of the Jewish community to celebrate the start of Hanukkah.
“LYA dedicates the lighting of the Menorah all eight nights to those held hostage in Gaza who are unable to celebrate Hanukkah this year,” said Kosofsky.
He noted that each evening, LYA will read some of the names of the hostages, with some of the first names being read during the ceremony.
