Springfield native to bring New York Fashion Week to city

Date: 2/9/2023

SPRINGFIELD – Fashion designer and tailor Justin Haynes has had his work featured at Paris Fashion Week (conducted at the Eiffel Tower), New York Fashion Week, LA Fashion Week, and Miami Fashion Week.

This year the Springfield native is bringing the New York Fashion Week to his hometown. He will present his collection CORE by ONYX, the Basics of Luxury at the Michele and Donald D’Amour Museum of Fine Arts on Feb. 15.

“Feb. 15 will be a night where a dream becomes history, and fine art meets fashion,” he said.

Haynes explained to Reminder Publishing he is bringing editors and Fashion Week officials to the museum to see his collection. A small, invited audience will also be present but the event will be streamed through the Council of Fashion Designers America (CFDA) website and his own website https://www.jus10h.com.

Haynes has seen his work featured on covers of magazines such as “Glam,” “The Source,” “Skope” and “LA Feeds,” among many others.

CFDA describes him on its website: “The international fashion designer/tailor Justin Haynes has blossomed into the new must-see fashion sensation. His signature designs have been noticed on runways across the U.S. and beyond. Justin is an energetic, creative visionary designer who thrives on pushing the envelope. The fusion of bright colors, distinct patterns and elegant patchwork has allowed his brand to be both recognized and requested by some of the fashion industry’s most prominent icons.”

Haynes said that he has been interested in fashion design since middle school. “It was all I wanted to do,” he said. Attending the High School of Science and Technology, he started sewing his own designs and began his professional career in 2009.

With all of the clothes he designs there is an element of patchwork, which is his signature. He added that he likes to pull style elements from the 1960s to the 1990s and make them his own.

He makes custom clothes in his Enfield, CT, studio and explained that each piece is unique. His custom assignment comes out of one-on-one consultation with the customer.

Coming from a medium-sized city such as Springfield to work in a competitive industry centered in cities such as New York and Paris was “not an easy task,” he readily admitted. “Springfield is not a fashion city,” he added, “however it should be. There are plenty of fashionable people there.”

“Fashion is what we wear every day,” he said. The difference is style, which he explained is “how we put it together.”

Listing Academy Award-wining designer and fellow Springfield native Ruth Carter as a mentor, Haynes said, “I owe to the city to bring fashion alive here.” Presenting his work at the Museum of Fine arts is a “dream”,’ he added, especially during Black History Month.

“The Springfield Museums are honored to showcase the spectacular fashions of Justin Haynes in the D’ Amour Museum of Fine Arts as a livestreaming event during New York Fashion Week. It is a privilege to celebrate a hometown hero and renowned artist at the Quadrangle,” said Kay Simpson, president and CEO of the Springfield Museums.
