Springfield Parks and Rec returns with Movies in the Park series

SPRINGFIELD – Residents will be able to enjoy a movie under the starry night skies with the Parks and Recreation Department’s return of Movies in the Park this summer.

Mayor Domenic Sarno made the announcement alongside Executive Director of Parks, Buildings and Recreation Management (PBRM) Patrick Sullivan members of the PBRM department and the East Springfield Neighborhood Council on July 11. The series started on July 11 and features three movies, “Encanto,” “Sing 2” and “Space Jam: A New Legacy,” that will run for four nights a week at different park locations across the city.

Each movie will begin at 8:15 p.m. Here is a list of showtimes below:

July 21 – Myrtle Street Park – “Sing 2”

July 22 – Nathan Bill Park – “Sing 2”

July 25 - Marshall Roy Park – “Space Jam: A New Legacy”

July 27 – Calhoun Park – “Space Jam: A New Legacy”

July 28 – Myrtle Street Park – “Space Jam: A New Legacy”

July 29 – Nathan Bill Park – “Space Jam: A New Legacy”

The 2022 Movies in the Park series features an expansion from last year, including an additional day for showtimes and the inclusion of Calhoun and Myrtle Street parks. There are no rain date showings if a showtime is canceled due to weather.

The Movies in the Park showings in Marshall Roy Park will also feature a COVID-19 vaccination clinic ran by Behavioral Health Network and the East Springfield Neighborhood Council. The clinic will run from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. and will be available for anyone eligible for a vaccination.

In his official statement, Sarno reflected on the importance of the event as a fun, family-friendly summer activity.

“My administration is committed to continuing to enhance the quality of life for our residents with these types of family fun entertainment are more important than ever as we return to a sense of normalcy. What better way to celebrate summer than with this great family friendly activity, outdoors in our beautiful park system,” said Sarno in the city’s press release.

Sullivan also expressed his support for the returning series.

“We appreciate Mayor Sarno’s commitment to restore programming and activities for our residents. Movies in the Park provide an opportunity for the whole family to be together under the stars and enjoying time together. Bring your favorite movie snack and have a good time,” said Sullivan in the city’s press release.
