SPRINGFIELD – The Commonwealth may not be ready for sports betting, but MGM Springfield is.

Casino officials unveiled an area designed just for sports betting last week. Constructed behind the “island bar” near the Main Street entrance of the casino, the area has 70 lounge seats that face a 45 foot-long viewing screen that can have 16 different events playing.

Adjacent to the seating is an area designed for groups to watch sports together. The counter at which bets can be placed is under a second group of television screens.

“It’s a great place for New Englanders to come and watch sports,” Beth Ward, community Affairs Manager told Reminder Publishing.

In a written statement, casinos officials said, “The venue is designed to seamlessly incorporate sports betting via the BetMGM platform should Massachusetts lawmakers pass future legislation.”

The sports betting area was not the only new addition to the casino. Ward noted that in the TAP sports bar the arcade games near the bowling alleys have been removed and in their place is a VIP Sports Lounge complete with an 8” by 13’ viewing screen. The lounge has easy chairs and couches and can be reserved for groups, Ward, added.

It also has its own special menus.

At the present TAP is open only on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.

According to a written statement, “The debut of these venues reinforce the resort’s position and commitment as the market’s leading destination for sports and entertainment.”
