SPRINGFIELD – State Sen. Eric Lesser said the reason he was sponsoring his “Thrive After 55” for a second time was direct: people after the age of 55 have so many questions confronting them at that time of their lives.
Retirement, Lesser said, “can be exciting times, but also a time of anxiety.” Issues concerning insurance, healthcare, housing among those confronting older adults.
The goal of the daylong event, conducted this year at Springfield College, is to bring people together with a variety of service providers.
“We want to to give them connections and make sure they know they are not alone,” the senator added.
Just 40 minutes into the event and Lesser said he was “overwhelmed” by the turnout. By the end of it, nearly 1,000 people attended.
In all, 50 organizations participated from AARP to the City of Springfield’s Office of Elder Affairs to Baystate and Mercy medical centers. There were also more than 30 raffle prizes and four interactive presentations.
There were presentations ranging from avoiding frequently used scams to elder law to nutrition and yoga.
Lesser plans to present the event gain next year.
