Legacy sale of Huntington artist will benefit Norwich Hill church

Date: 10/26/2022

HUNTINGTON – A sale of paintings and poetry books created by Mary Elizabeth “Betty” Langlois will take place at the Norwich Hill Congregational church on the weekend of Oct. 28, 29 and 30.

A Russell native, Langlois lived on Cullen Road in Huntington for 40 years in a log cabin that she built, and where she kept horses for many years, before her death in 2016.

Langlois led an interesting and long life. She was a nun, a U.S. Navy veteran, a horse-riding trainer, an English teacher in the Gateway Regional School District and an associate editor at the Country Journal newspaper.

Her paintings were mainly plein air of local scenes in oil and watercolor, which she described as American expressionist. She also painted horses and dogs, still life and religious themes. The paintings are both framed and unframed and offered for suggested donations, depending on the size and format, beginning at $10 and up.

Langlois wrote poetry under the name “The Pillar.” Her three books of poems about nature and spirituality will also be on sale at the church for $10 each, or all three for $25. Towards the end of her life, local jazz musician and composer Jerry Noble put her poetry to music for a show performed at Smith College.

All proceeds will benefit the fuel and missions funds of the Norwich Hill church, where Langlois was a longtime member. Lori Belhumeur, church member and Langlois’ neighbor on Cullen Road, is curating the sale. She may be reached at 887-9746.

Sale hours are 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Oct. 28 and 29, and noon to 3 p.m. on Oct. 30.
