WESTFIELD — In advance of the city election, Reminder Publishing sent questionnaires to candidates on the Nov. 7 ballot.
Both of the candidates for Ward 1 city councilor were given the same list of five questions. At press time, only one of the candidates had returned the questionnaire with answers. Two answers are being printed in today’s newspaper, and the remaining three will be printed during the two weeks before Election Day, starting Oct. 27.
Candidates for this two-year term are listed in alphabetical order. There is no incumbent in the race.
Unique attributes
What background, belief or skill would you bring to the City Council that nobody else on the ballot does?
John Bowen: This candidate did not submit responses in time for the deadline.
Karen Fanion: I have lived in Westfield my whole life and recently retired from my position as city clerk, which I held for 24 years. I have worked with many administrations during my tenure at City Hall (1982 to 2022). I have attended nearly 1,000 City Council meetings, making me already aware of the concerns of Ward 1 residents. I understand the rules of the City Council and procedures for City Hall, making me uniquely qualified to serve the constituents of Ward 1. I will be ready to serve on day one without skipping a beat.
Constituent voices
What will you do to keep in touch with your constituents in Ward 1, and ensure their voices are heard when the council votes?
John Bowen: This candidate did not submit responses in time for the deadline.
Karen Fanion: I will schedule Ward 1 community meetings to hear the concerns of my constituents. I will especially reach out to Ward 1 when there is a public hearing, a zone change or a particular issue the directly impacts Ward 1. I am a good listener. I will listen to their concerns, find the answers and report back to them. I will bring their concerns forward to the full council.
