Q&A with Westfield Ward 2 City Council candidates

Date: 10/11/2023

WESTFIELD — In advance of the city election, Reminder Publishing sent questionnaires to candidates on the Nov. 7 ballot.

Both of the candidates for Ward 2 city councilor were given the same list of five questions. Two answers are being printed in today’s newspaper, and the remaining three will be printed during the two weeks before Election Day, starting Oct. 27. The first two questions had a word limit of 75 words.

Candidates for this two-year term, challenger Jessica Britton and incumbent Ralph Figy, are listed in alphabetical order.

Unique attributes

What background, belief or skill would you bring to the City Council that nobody else on the ballot does?

Jessica Britton: I am deeply vested in Westfield. Many generations of my family have lived here. I was born here, went to Westfield public schools, and Westfield State College. I worked at the iconic Abdow’s Family Restaurant while attending school. I love working with people and finding solutions to difficult challenges. I have two children currently at WMS and one at WSU. I know this community and care about what we are leaving to Westfield’s future generations.

Ralph Figy: I bring a combination of experience, dedication, and leadership. I have called Westfield home for 39 years and have been the Ward 2 councilor for the past 10. I have the ability to work with all different councilors to improve life in Westfield. This skill is uncommon in today’s political climate, but is necessary for progress to be made. After 10 years, I know how to create effective change for my constituents.

Constituent voices

What will you do to keep in touch with your constituents in Ward 1, and ensure their voices are heard when the council votes?

Jessica Britton: I stated in the 12/15/2022 City Council meeting (https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZPR7rtFe5/), that we need a connection or outreach with the community. Very few are paying attention to the current modes of communication. People don’t know who the city councilors are and what their job entails. I want to bring transparency to city government. I want to hold quarterly meetings in my ward to keep the community abreast of projects that affect them and hear their concerns.

Ralph Figy: … Several things. … Prior to the COVID, I held office hours at the Senior Center. As the pandemic has progressed, I have reinstituted those office hours. I have published my email and cellphone number. I do my best to return all phone calls and emails within 24 hours. I have neighborhood meetings when an issue arises that affects a specific neighborhood. I attend other boards and commissions to advocate for Ward 2 residents, as well.
