Delisle named MASCAC’s field athlete of the week after AIC Invitational

BUZZARDS BAY – Zack Delisle, a Westfield State University (WSU) sophomore from Chicopee, was named the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference field athlete of the week in the track and field weekly awards released on April 7.

Delisle placed fourth in the pole vault by clearing 14 feet, 1.25 inches (4.30 meters) – currently the fifth best height in New England – and qualified for Division III New England at the American International College (AIC) Yellow Jacket Invitational.

Fellow WSU sophomore Tim Shea of West Springfield was named to the weekly honor roll after he finished fourth in the 10,000-meter run with an All-New England qualifying time of 32:28.87, which is currently eighth-fastest in New England.

Targie Gervais a WSU senior from Springfield, finished fifth in the 100 meter dash (12.63) and placed sixth in the 200 meter dash (26.25) to earn a spot on the honor roll.

Jeptui Cherutich of Springfield ran a 4:50.11, placing fourth in the 1,500 meter run for the AIC women, who placed fourth on the day.

Farnsworth knocks in three in Elms baseball sweep

HOLYOKE – Sam Farnsworth of Westfield went 3 for 4 with two RBI in game one and 2 for 4 with an RBI in game two to help the Elms College baseball team post victories of 11-3 and 8-0 in a doubleheader sweep of Maine-Presque Isle on April 6.

WSU Men's baseball swept by Mass. Maritime

BUZZARDS BAY – Connor Sheridan of South Hadley drove in WSU’s lone run in game one of a lost doubleheader for the Owls, who dropped both games to the Massachusetts Maritime Academy by scores of 9-1 and 8-1 on April 6.

Circosta has big day as WSU women trounce Mass. Maritime

BUZZARDS BAY – Paige Circosta of Feeding Hills completed a doubleheader by going 3 for 6 at the plate with six runs scored and five RBI as the WSU softball team throttled the Massachusetts Maritime Academy in both games 22-1 and 21-1 on April 6.

In game one, Circosta went 1 for 3 with two walks, three runs scored and an RBI from the No. 9 spot in the batting order. She followed that up with a 2 for 3 performance out of the leadoff spot, recording a bases-clearing triple in the second inning and an RBI double in the third to go along with three runs scored.

Colson impressive in loss

LEICESTER – Jessica Colson of Agawam was the hard luck loser on April 6, putting on an impressive display in the circle, allowing just one unearned run on two hits in six innings of work in the Elms College softball team’s 1-0 loss in game two of a doubleheader against Becker College. She fanned seven batters and walked just two.

The Blazers also squandered a strong pitching performance in game one, falling 2-0.

Springfield College splits with MIT, sweeps Smith

SPRINGFIELD – A triple from Brielle Engelbrecht of Granby drove home a run to spark a 6-0 run for the Pride as the Springfield College softball team won game two of a doubleheader with Massachusetts Institute of Technology 9-0 on April 6. The Pride lost the first game 2-1.

Engelbrecht also hit a base-clearing double to deep left field to put the Pride up 4-0 in a 4-1 win in game two of a doubleheader sweep of Smith College on April 4. Springfield College won the first game 4-3.

Niemiec a double winner

SPRINGFIELD – Alex Niemiec of Chicopee was a double-event winner in the Springfield College men’s track and field team’s 100-85 loss to Middlebury College on April 5.

Niemiec took first in both the high jump and the long jump, winning the high jump with a height of 6-2 and the long jump with a leap of 23-06.

Narey records hat trick in loss

CHICOPEE – Kayla Narey of South Hadley recorded a hat trick and Nora McDonough, also of South Hadley added one goal in the Elms College women’s lacrosse team’s 17-5 loss to Becker College on April 5.

AIC falls despite Paige’s complete game effort

RINDGE, N.H. – Harrison Paige of Springfield pitched all eight innings in game one of an April 5 doubleheader between the AIC baseball team and Franklin Pierce University striking out five and allowing just two earned runs in a 4-3 loss.

The Yellow Jackets also lost game two 15-8.

Gallo’s six goals not enough

BABSON PARK – Despite a six-point performance from senior Kelly Gallo of Westfield, the Springfield College women’s lacrosse team fell to Babson College on April 5.

Elms golf takes seventh at RIC Invitational

WARWICK, R.I. – Chris Miele of South Hadley registered a two-day score of 170 as the Elms College golf team notched a combined score of 664 to finish seventh at the Rhode Island College Invitational, which wrapped up on April 5.

AIC edged by Assumption

SPRINGFIELD – Justin Bard of Westfield finished with six points off four goals and two assists, while teammate Bobby Spano of West Springfield recorded three goals and five points as the AIC men’s lacrosse team fell to Assumption College 15-14 on April 5.

Elms volleyball falls to Daniel Webster

NASHUA, N.H. – Middle hitters Cristian Arroyo of Chicopee and Austin DeCosmo of Southwick recorded three kills each and libero Roger Conklin of Chicopee finished with nine digs in the Elms College volleyball team’s 3-1 (21-25, 25-21, 25-15, 25-16) loss to Daniel Webster College on April 5.
