Local golfers qualify for 2015 U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship

SOUTH HADLEY – A.J. Oleksak of Longmeadow Country Club (35, 35) and John Kelly of Twin Hills Country Club (35, 35), tied for third with a score of 70 at the 2015 U.S. Mid-Amateur Sectional Qualifying, which was hosted by The Orchards Golf Club Sept. 3.

Both will compete at the 2015 U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship, which will take place Oct. 3 to 8, at John's Island Club in Vero Beach, FL.

Basile honored by MASCAC

BUZZARDS BAY – Springfield’s Anthony Basile, a junior forward for the MCLA men’s soccer team, netted two goals in a 0-1-1 week for the Trailblazers to earn a spot on the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) weekly honor roll. He scored a goal in the 3-3 tie to SUNY-Poly and another score in the 2-1 loss to Western Connecticut State.

MASCAC recognizes Footit’s fleet feet

BUZZARDS BAY – Massachusetts Maritime Academy women’s cross country’s Mara Footit of Wilbraham took top individual honors for the Buccaneers at the Massachusetts Maritime Travis Fuller Invitational, covering the 5K layout with a winning time of 20:23 and leading the squad to a third place team finish in a performance that earned her a spot on the MASCAC weekly honor roll.

Hurwitz helps Pride to tournament win

SPRINGFIELD – Jennifer Hurwitz of Longmeadow registered a double-double of 10 kills and 11 digs as she was one of five players with at least six kills in the Springfield College women's volleyball team’s 3-0 (25-20, 25-21, 25-15) win over Western Connecticut on its way to capturing the Springfield College Invitational Sept. 5.

Hurwitz also picked up a match-high 13 digs and three aces in a 3-0 (25-17, 25-15, 25-21) win over Oneonta State in day one of the tournament Sept. 4.

Voight named NECC Player of the Week

ATTLEBORO – Elms College sophomore Brie Voight of Springfield was named the first New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) Women's Soccer Player of the Week for the 2015 season. This is Voight's first NECC Player of the Week award.

Voight racked up five points in a pair of victories for the Blazers to kick off the 2015 campaign. In a 3-2 win over Rhode Island College, Voight broke a 1-1 scoreless tie to record her first career goal with the Blazers. Voight was crucial to Elms' 2-1 victory over Albertus Magnus, netting the first goal of the game, followed by delivering the assist on the game-winner from sophomore Mackenzie LaRochelle of Chicopee.

Labrie’s quick score sparks Golden Bears

BANGOR, ME – Junior Brooke Labrie of Granby notched her first collegiate goal just 78 seconds into the contest to lead the Western New England University women's soccer to a convincing 4-0 victory Sept. 6 over Newbury College at the 11th annual Husson University Eagles Classic.

According to coach Ron Dias, Labrie’s tally may be the program's quickest to start a game during his 22-year tenure.

Labrie was one of four Golden Bears named to the All-Tournament Team.

Alvaro paces Springfield College in strong start to 2015

SPRINGFIELD –  Luke Alvaro of Chicopee started off the 2015 season strong.

He netted pair of goals to lead the Springfield College men’s soccer program to its first victory of the season, 3-0, over Lasell College on Sept. 4.

He also recorded two assists in Springfield College men's soccer program led to a 6-1 victory over Keene State College Sept. 6.

Keene scores first goal in WSU loss

GORHAM, ME – Westfield State University freshman Brodie Keene of Feeding Hills headed home a free kick in the first half to tie the match at 1-1, but the U.S. Coast Guard Academy scored five straight goals to sail past the Owls 6-1 at the USM Invitational on Sept. 5.

Glantz helps secure key victory in WNE tennis win

SPRINGFIELD – Joeanna Glantz of Agawam was part of the first doubles team that won 8-3 to stake the Western New England University women’s tennis team to a lead it would never give up in a season-opening 8-0 victory over Johnson State College Sept. 4.
