Local Roundup: Hockey East honors locals

WAKEFIELD – Two local residents, Tyler Kelleher and Frank Vatrano, were recognized by Hockey East as Weekly Top Performers on Feb. 9.

Kelleher, a sophomore forward at the University of New Hampshire from Longmeadow, picked up five points (3 goals, 2 assists) in two games at No. 17 UVM, helping spark a 6-3 come-from-behind win Feb. 7.

Vatrano, a sophomore forward at the University of Massachusetts  Amherst from East Longmeadow, netted two goals, including the game-winner, in a 5-2 win over No. 11 University of Massachusetts Lowell on Feb. 7.

Ferrentino returns to NE-10 honor roll
MANSFIELD – American International College senior forward Krista Ferrentino East Longmeadow again landed on the Week 12 Northeast-10 Women’s Basketball Report honor roll announced by the league office Feb. 9. She averaged 13.5 points and 9 rebounds last week while notching her eighth double-double of the season in the team’s win over Pace, 54-48.

Dudeck named to All-NEILA Division III Preseason Team
NEWTON – Western New England University’s Keegan Dudeck of Longmeadow was named to the 2015 All-New England Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association Division III Preseason Team. Dudeck earned a third-team selection.

Dudeck, the team’s top returning scorer led WNE freshmen with 13 goals, 14 assists and 27 total points last year. On May 6, he was named the CCC and ECAC Division III offensive player of the week and rookie of the week.

Smith signs to play football at Bentley
WALTHAM – Lineman Brett Smith of East Longmeadow signed a National Letter of Intent to Bentley University football, head coach Bill Kavanaugh announced Feb. 4, National Signing Day.

Smith, a three-year letterwinner for East Longmeadow head coach Scott Raymond as both an offensive and defensive lineman, was captain of the league champion Spartans. As a senior, he was named All-Conference and All-District. Smith is also a letterman for the Spartan basketball and track and field teams.
