Mercadante carves up Nichols, receives MASCAC weekly honors

WESTFIELD – Westfield State University (WSU) senior running back Michael Mercadante of Wilbraham was named the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletics Conference football offensive Player of the Week.

Mercadante rushed for a career high 196 yards and two touchdowns, including a 50-yard touchdown run that proved to be the game winner as the Owls came from behind to beat Nichols College 30-22 in the season opener in front of more than 3,000 fans at Alumni Field on Sept. 5.

WSU, 1-0, will travel to local rival Western New England  University for the annual “President’s Cup” rivalry game on Sept. 13 for a 1 p.m. kickoff.

Pereira named MASCAC Co-Player of the Week
BUZZARDS BAY – Dylan Pereira, a sophomore forward for the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts men’s soccer team from Ludlow, scored the game winner in the Trailblazers’ 3-2 win over Castleton State College to earn MASCAC Co-Player of the Week honors.

WSU’s Dom Cavallini of Springfield also earned a spot on the honor roll after he netted a goal in the Owls’ 2-2 tie at Albertus Magnus College.

Monahan places 12th at Trinity invitational
HARTFORD, Conn. – Ashley Monahan of Springfield placed 12th with a time of 18:26 to help the WSU women’s cross-country team to a second-place finish in Trinity Bantam Cross Country Invitational on Sept. 6.

Hurwitz helps pace Pride to title
SPRINGFIELD – Jennifer Hurwitz of Longmeadow stuffed the stat sheet with 11 digs, six kills, four blocks and two aces as the Springfield College women’s volleyball team defeated Rivier College and Amherst College in straight sets on Sept. 6 to capture the Springfield College Invitational.

Springfield College places eighth at Smith College
NORTHAMPTON – Elizabeth Footit of Wilbraham finished 54th with a time of 22:13.20 Springfield College women’s cross-country team finished eighth overall at the Smith College Invitational on Sept. 6.

On the men’s side, Luis Brignoni of Springfield finished second for Elms College.
