Mutiny allows five goals in consecutive games for first time in club history

NORTH ANDOVER – The New England Mutiny (3-4-2 WPSL New England) allowed five goals for the second straight match en route to a 5-1 loss to Boston Breakers Academy (5-1-2 WPSL New England) at North Andover High School.

This is the first time in the team’s 15-year history that the defense has surrendered five goals to an opponent in two separate games in one season.

Boston scored early and often on the New England defense as U.S. U-20 Women’s National Team forward McKenzie Meehan and U.S. U-23 forward Stephanie McCaffrey put the hosts on the board in the ninth and 11th minutes, respectively.

Wholesale substitutions by Mutiny head coach Roy Gurnon stopped the onslaught in the first half, but the Breakers would find their feet again in the second half.

U.S. U-23 midfielder Samantha Mewis fired a 30-yard rocket past New England goalkeeper Carly McCabe in the 56th minute to make the game 3-0 and cement the result for Boston. Goals from Meehan in the 72nd minute and McCaffrey in the 83rd minute finished the scoring for the Breakers. The Mutiny’s Tori Sousa scored her third goal of the season in the 77th minute and was the lone tally for the visitors.

What’s left for the Summer 2014 WPSL season for New England is their home finale on July 12 versus Aztec F.C. at East Longmeadow High School.

The team will hope to avoid their first-ever losing season against their long-time divisional rival.

It will also be “AAA Night” as fans can sign up to win a $500 travel voucher courtesy of AAA that will be given away at halftime.
