Pioneers look to shake off U.S. Open Cup loss vs. Phoenix

Date: 5/22/2015

LUDLOW – The Western Mass Pioneers are ready to forget the heartbreaking loss in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup to the Greater Binghamton FC Thunder in penalties last week and start the 2015 USL PDL season.

The Pioneers will kick off the season by hosting GPS Portland Phoenix May 22, 7:30 p.m., at Lusitano Stadium.

“We are ready to start the PDL regular season” Pioneers head coach Dennis Gomes said. “We have a lot of new players here that have to get used to our system. We have some good athletes with speed and technique, we have to train hard together and get everyone on the same page.”

One thing that stood out during the Pioneers’ last game was their defense, which did not break despite being a man down since the 57th minute.

“GPS is a perennial power in our division” general manager Greg Kolodziey said. “They always acquire great players and they have excellent coaching. It will be a good test for our team.”
