Roundup: Brochu tabbed Northeast 10 Defensive Player of the Year

MANSFIELD – Southern Connecticut State University’s Sarah Brochu earned Northeast-10 Defensive Player of the Year honors, it was announced on Nov. 4.

Brochu helped lead the Owls to a 9-4-1 record in league play, as they earned the 4th-seed in the 2014 NE-10 Championship. So. Connecticut's defense has allowed less then a goal per outing so far this season, and the senior's play is a big reason why. Brochu was also named to the Northeast-10 Conference’s First Team.

STACK RECEIVES CONFERENCE HONORS
BUZZARD’S BAY – Anne Stack, the Westfield State University women’s soccer team’s sophomore goalkeeper, earned a spot on the  Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Nov. 17 honor roll. 

The East Longmeadow native tallied 11 saves and a .917 save percentage in a 1-1 week for the Owls, including 10 saves in the 1-0 ECAC Semifinal setback to Western New England University.

KING NAMED TO MASCAC HONOR ROLL
BUZZARDS BAY – Westfield State University men’s basketball senior guard Andre King of  Springfield was named to the MASCAC honor roll Nov. 17. King averaged 21 points, 6.5 rebounds and 4.5 assists in a 1-1 week for the Owls, including 26 points, six rebounds and six assists in the 84-65 win over Rozanski  College and 16 points with seven rebounds and three assists in the 68-56 setback to Bowdoin College.

GARSTKA LEADS WSU PAST CROSSTOWN RIVAL WNE
SPRINGFIELD - Westfield’s Alex Garstka scored 17 points and registered eight assists and Andrew McNulty of West Springfield came off the bench with six points and three assists to help the Springfield College men’s basketball team past Western New England University (WNE) 90-77 in the Play4Jody game Nov. 18.

Play4Jody is a WNE Athletics campaign to support staff member Jody Lemoi, who is battling leukemia.

WNE senior co-captain Musa Elsir netted 14 points  and pulled down six rebounds in the loss.

Elsir also had 12 points and grabbed eight rebounds in the Keene State College Tip-Off Tournament Nov. 16.

GRINDLE COMPETES AT NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS
WILLIAMSTOWN – Feeding Hills’ Amy Grindle capped off her 2014 WNE women’s cross country season at the 2014 NCAA Division III New England Regional Championships, recording a time of 26:58.30. WNE finished 43rd as a team.

LYNCH NEARLY TALLIES DOUBLE-DOUBLE
CHICOPEE Junior forward Kadar Lynch of Springfield just missed a double-double in the Elms College men’s basketball team’s 70-68 loss to Keene State College on Nov. 18. Lynch tallied nine points, nine rebounds and five blocks.

He also contributed eight points off the bench for the Blazers and blocked four shots in the Blazers’ first win of the season, a 63-53 victory over Manhattanville on Nov. 16,

CONNORS TOPS FIELD IN IM FOR ELMS
CHICOPEE – Freshman Ashlee Connors of Springfield won the 200 meter individual medley (3:02.61) and earned  fourth-place finishes in the 200 meter backstroke (2:54.81) and the 100 meter backstroke (1:19.28), but the Elms College women's swimming team was defeated by visiting Smith College 141-93 on Nov. 18.

ADAMOPOULOS PUTS FORTH STRONG DEFENSIVE EFFORT
SPRINGFIELD – Ludlow’s Ava Adamopoulos was strong defensively, blocking a game-high four shots while pulling town three rebounds, but the Springfield College women’s basketball team fell to Springfield College 68-63 on Nov. 18 in the Play4Jody game Nov. 18.

ORSZULAK CONTINUES TO FIND SCORING TOUCH FOR AIC
ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Sophomore left wing Austin Orszulak of Springfield scored twice but the University of Michigan held on to a 4-1 lead in a 6-3 win over the American International College ice hockey team at Yost Arena on Nov. 15.

Heading into the Nov. 21 and 22 games against Robert Morris, Orszulak led the team with six goals and eight points. He was also tied for fifth in the Atlantic Hockey Association in goals scored.
