Spartans harriers run past Orioles

EAST LONGMEADOW – In what coach Michael Budd described as a “very competitive race,” the East Longmeadow girls cross country team took first, second and fourth place in a 26-31 victory over Belchertown on Sept. 15.

Abby Laughlin and Abby Rate led the way with respective times of 18:49 and 19:26. Tori Evans placed fourth in 20:49 and Kay Laughlin rounded out East Longmeadow’s top-10 finishers in seventh with a time of 21:30.

Fontaine places 39th at Duke Nelson Invitational

MIDDLEBURY, VT – East Longmeadow’s Matt Fontaine finished tied for 39th with a two-round score of 159 (78, 81) as the Western New England University golf team earned eighth place out of 25 teams at the 32nd Duke Nelson Invitational hosted by Middlebury College.

Monahan competes at UMass Dartmouth Invitational

WESTFIELD – Springfield’s Ashley Monahan finished in 28th place with a time of 19:17 as the Westfield State University women’s cross country team placed 11th overall at the UMass Dartmouth Invitational on Sept. 19.

Stack records shutout

WESTFIELD – Westfield State women’s soccer goalkeeper Anne Stack of East Longmeadow stopped all three shots on net to earn the win in a 1-0 victory over Salem State on Sept. 19.

Hurwitz helps Pride pas Coast Guard

SPRINGFIELD – Jennifer Hurwitz of Longmeadow was credited with six kills as Springfield College women's volleyball team cruised past the Coast Guard Academy in straight sets (25-18, 25-9, 25-13) on Sept. 15.

Kraver earns MASCAC honors 

WESTFIELD – The Westfield State University men’s soccer team’s sophomore goalkeeper Alex Kraver  of West Springfield earned Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference men’s soccer player of the week honors.

After missing four consecutive games due to injury, Kraver returned to lead the Owls to a 1-0-1 week, posting 16 saves and a 0.82 goals against average.

Kraver made a career-high 13 saves to preserve a 1-1 tie with Trinity College. The Owls earned the tie despite being outshot, 39-7, and 9-1 in the overtime period.

The sophomore then propelled Westfield State to its first win of the season, posting the first shutout of his career in a 1-0 victory over Salem State. Kraver made three saves in the win, including a diving stop on a penalty kick in the second half to keep the lead.

Brodie Keene of Feeding Hills netted the lone goal in the win over Salem State.

Alvaro scores again in Springfield College win

SPRINGFIELD – Luke Alvaro of Chicopee pumped home his team-leading seventh goal of the year as the Springfield College  men’s soccer team cruised past Anna Maria 5-0 on Sept. 21.

Agrait nets first collegiate goal

SPRINGFIELD – Luis Agrait of South Hadley scored his first collegiate goal, burying a shot into the lower-left part of the net on a throw-in as the Western New England University men’s soccer team knocked off previously unbeaten Wentworth 2-1 on Sept. 19.

Ritter scores in WSU draw

HARTFORD – Cam Ritter of Agawam potted the Westfield State men’s soccer team’s lone goal in a 1-1 double overtime draw against Trinity College on Sept. 15.

Labrie nets goal in loss

SPRINGFIELD – Brooke Labrie of Granby one-timed a volley into the back of the net in a 3-2 Western New England University women’s soccer loss to Mount Holyoke College on Sept. 15.
