Springfield College women’s swimming tops Middlebury

SPRINGFIELD –  Behind nine first-place finishes, including two by Callie Phillips of East Longmeadow, the Springfield College women’s swimming and diving team edged Middlebury College 152-148 on Dec. 12.

Phillips recorded first-place finishes in the 500- and 100-yard freestyle, posting times of 5:20.02 and 10:47.92, respectively.

Delaney Dyjak of Ludlow also had a strong meet for the Pride, as she won the 50- and 100-yard butterfly out-right, touching in 26.42 in the 50 and 59.39 in the 100.

Melanie Avdoulos of East Longmeadow and Taryn Hamel of Westfield split first-place scores on each board, as Avdoulos took home the 1-meter event, registering 234.60 points, while Hamel won the 3-meter with a score of 224.05.

On the men’s side, despite a first-place finish by senior Michael Normoyle of Springfield in the 100-yard breaststroke, Springfield College fell to Middlebury 197-69.

Kelleher finishes first half of the season strong

DURHAM, N.H. – Longmeadow’s Tyler Kelleher recorded two assists as the University of New Hampshire men’s hockey team beat in-state rival Dartmouth 6-3 on Dec. 11.

Kelleher ranks second in Hockey East and the nation in points per game (1.81), behind only linemate Andrew Poturalski and is first the conference and the nation in assists per game (1.44) and total assists. He is also second in the conference in power play points, again behind Poturalski.

Suse leaps into collegiate career

BOSTON – Paige Suse of East Longmeadow finished second overall in the high jump at 1.65 meters in her first collegiate meet as the Northeastern University track and field programs kicked off the indoor season with standout performances in the Boston University Season Opener Dec. 9.

Suse also finished sixth in the high jump at the 2015 Jay Carisella
Track & Field Invitational hosted by Northeastern on Dec. 12.

Orszulak pivotal to AIC’s weekend sweep of Army

SPRINGFIELD – Springfield’s Austin Orszulak netted a goal and assisted two others, including the game-winner in overtime to give the American International College men’s hockey team a 3-2 victory, their second-straight extra time decision to sweep Army West Point, on Dec. 12.

On Dec. 11, Orszulak potted the game-winner in overtime to give AIC the 4-3 skate-off victory over the United States Military Academy.

For his efforts, Orszulak was named Player of the Week by the Atlantic Hockey Association.

Sanchez strong in WSU win over Springfield College

WESTFIELD – Jesus Sanchez of Springfield played a strong all-around game for the Owls, scoring a team-high 21 points to go along with a team-high four assists. As the Westfield State men’s basketball team toppled Springfield College 74-57 on Dec. 11. Sanchez also played a game-high 36 minutes and nailed all three of his three-point attempts.

Andy McNulty of West Springfield chipped in 10 points.

Groux helps WSU to victory

Owls freshman Monique Groux of Agawam won the 1-meter diving as Westfield State women’s swimming and diving team won 13 of the 16 events in a 160-121 win over Plymouth State on Dec. 12.

Adamopoulos leads Pride

SPRINGFIELD – Led by 25 points and 11 rebounds from junior center Ava Adamopoulos of Ludlow the Springfield College women’s basketball team came out victorious over Worcester State 63-51 on Dec. 11.

Adamopoulos also notched 14 points and eight boards as the Pride defeated Suffolk University 74-71 for its fourth-straight victory.

Elms competes at GNAC Invitational and Championships

BOSTON – The Elms College men’s swimming team finished third on the team leaderboard, while the women’s team claimed sixth at the 2015 Great Northeast Athletic Conference Men’s Invitational and Women’s Championships Dec. 6.

James Grippo of Longmeadow was part of a 400-yard medley relay that placed second with a time of 3:59.47.

The relay team that included Ashlee Connors of Springfield, Kayla Gurney of Wilbraham and Desi Milar of Springfield raced to a third-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay (2:06.76) and a fourth-place finish in the 400-yard medley relay (4:47.82).

Connors also checked in at fourth in the 50-yard backstroke (31.42).   

Alvaro named ECAC All Star

DANBURY, CT – Standout Springfield College men’s soccer player Luke Alvaro of Chicopee continued to be recognized for his exceptional season on Dec. 17 morning, as he was named to the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III New England All-Star team.

Alvaro was named to the second team for offense, as he posted one of the best offensive seasons in the Pride’s Division III program history.

Along with being named an ECAC All-Star, Alvaro garnered National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-Region Honors, as well as being named First Team All-Conference by the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) at season’s end.
