Springfield colleges seek public input in choosing name for rivalry football game

Date: 7/23/2014

SPRINGFIELD – The Western New England University (WNE) and Springfield College athletic departments are collaborating to name the annual football game between the two institutions and are asking fans for their input.

Despite being located just three miles apart, it will be only the second-ever meeting when the two teams open up their seasons on Sept. 5, under the lights at Springfield College’s Stagg Field at 7 p.m.

Fans are being asked to submit their suggestions for what the game should be called and the winner will take home a $100 gift card to Hot Table.

Suggestions can be entered on either Twitter, @SC_Pride and @WNEAthletics or on Facebook by tagging Springfield College Athletics and Western New England Athletics. Fans are encouraged to use the hashtag #SpringfieldShowdown. Entries will be accepted until Aug. 5.

Last season, the teams ushered in the first installment of the rivalry, and it didn’t disappoint. Played in front of a WNE school-record crowd of 3,442 at Golden Bear Stadium, there was no shortage of offense, as the teams combined for 1,015 yards as the visiting Pride rallied for a 49-40 victory.
